Did I lock the door? Did I turn off the lights? Did I turn off the faucet? These questions pile up minutes after you leave home. You keep replaying the details in your memory: the twist of the handle, the feel of the switch... but memories aren't entirely reliable. You want to run back and check again, just to feel at ease. This is a form of compulsive doubt, and only a lucky few aren't troubled by it. Those who are, however, are tormented by it again and again. Did I lock the door? What if I didn't? Won't my home get robbed? Did I turn off the faucet? What if I didn't? The water will keep flowing and flowing until it floods the room, then the hallway, then the stairwell, then the entire building... These increasingly catastrophic imaginings spread through the mind, and from them, the "Faucet Left Running" was born. It is the embodiment of baseless fear, thus, the water that flows out appears dark and muddy, sometimes takes the form of monsters. After all, how could catastrophic imaginings exist without monsters?
